Despite being burned when releasing the Playbook, CEO of BlackBerry Thorsten Heins has suggested that the smartphone maker may consider manufacturing another tablet to complement the launch of their new operating system BlackBerry 10.
As with most BlackBerry products, one appealing feature of the PlayBook was the security and encryption specifications available – a boon for businesspeople that may have been storing confidential data. However, sales for the tablet were lower than expected, and it had a heavily detrimental impact on the profitability of the tablet as a whole – not least because too many units were made.
The key for BlackBerry’s success in the tablet market will be a device that offers healthy margins on hardware, not least because of how BB will not be making profit on apps and content like competitors such as Android. As another tablet is currently being built, we’ll have to wait and see.
